Are coated fabrics really waterproof?
2024-09-17 03:27:59

Coated fabric refers to the surface of the fabric coated with a layer of polyurethane or polyurethane ether and other materials to increase the waterproof performance of the fabric. Coated fabrics are very common in outdoor products such as raincoats and backpacks. So, are coated fabrics really waterproof? The answer is: Yes from one point of view, but not necessarily from another.

The reason why coated fabrics can be waterproof to a certain extent is that materials such as polyurethane or polyurethane ether added to the surface coating have excellent waterproof properties. When rain drops on the fabric, these coatings form a protective film that keeps the water out of the fabric. In this process, the polymer material of the coating can effectively keep moisture away from the fabric, thus maintaining the dry quality of the fabric itself.

However, coated fabrics are not absolutely waterproof. Its water resistance is limited. When the coating is subjected to scratches, friction, or objects with high penetration, the coating is easily damaged. When the coating is damaged, moisture may penetrate into the fabric, causing the fabric to lose its waterproof properties. In addition, in the course of long-term use, the waterproof performance of the coated fabric will gradually decrease. Because the aging of polymer materials, ultraviolet radiation and other factors will make the coating lose its original elasticity and waterproof properties.

In general, the waterproof performance of coated fabrics is relative and limited. In the case of ensuring that the coating is intact, the coated fabric can withstand rain better, but if the coating is damaged by scratching, friction, etc., its waterproof performance will be greatly reduced. Therefore, when choosing outdoor products, whether it is the performance, quality of coated fabrics or the brand and manufacturer of the purchase need to be carefully considered.
